REPTON SCHOOL HOSTS FOURTH INTERNATIONAL DEBATING FESTIVAL
The Repton Family of Schools united once again for the fourth annual International Debating Festival, a highlight in the academic and co-curricular calendar that celebrates pupil voice, oracy, and global collaboration.
Pupils from Repton School and Repton Prep joined their peers from Repton Dubai, Repton Al Barsha, Repton Abu Dhabi, Repton Cairo, and Vinehall School to take part in simultaneous remote debates, following a series of workshops within their individual debating societies.
Critical Thinking and Oracy
This enriching international event gave pupils from Key Stage 3 through to Key Stage 5 the opportunity to stretch their critical thinking, enhance their communication skills and explore complex global and moral issues from multiple perspectives. With a growing emphasis on oracy and the value of debate in developing young minds, the festival offered an engaging platform for pupils to practise persuasive argumentation, refine their research techniques and collaborate across continents.
The younger pupils (KS3) tackled the motion: "This house would prioritise happiness over success", encouraging them to interrogate what constitutes a meaningful life. Older pupils (KS4/5) debated the more provocative motion: "This house, as a high-achieving student, would choose to pursue a high-paying career path with limited direct social impact, rather than a stable career with moderate pay that contributes more visibly to society."
Commenting on the event, Mr Jack Swanston, Repton’s Head of Higher Education and organiser of the festival, said: "The Repton Family’s International Debating Festival continues to demonstrate the intellectual curiosity and passion our pupils have for the world around them. Debate equips young people with the tools to express themselves clearly, listen actively and challenge assumptions – skills that are vital both at university and in life."
Global Collaboration
As the debates concluded, adjudicators were impressed by the thoughtful analysis and teamwork on display. Congratulations to the winning teams in the KS3 debates: Dubai (A), Abu Dhabi (B), and Dubai (B). In the KS4/5 debate, Abu Dhabi (B), arguing in Closing Opposition, emerged as the winning team.
This festival highlights the value of events that bring together young minds across regions and cultures. Repton School is proud to offer a rich extra-curricular programme that supports academic excellence through activities such as debating.
